The Club That Built a Language Community
The Meguro English Conversation Club was founded in the mid-2000s on a single conviction: that the biggest obstacle to learning English in Japan was not ability - it was access. Textbooks were expensive. Native-speaker tutors even more so. But what if a weekly gathering in a public meeting room, for just 500 yen per session, could give anyone the practice they needed?
Word spread. Sister clubs opened across Japan: in Hiroshima, Chiba, Nagasaki, Kobe, Sapporo, Okinawa, Osaka, Yokohama, and beyond. Each one operated on the same model - a small entry fee, a comfortable room, and two hours of genuine conversation. The meguroenglish.com domain became the hub they all linked to.
For years the network thrived. Then, gradually, the original club wound down. Members moved, circumstances changed. The domain eventually lapsed.
But the idea never died. We revived it - not as a physical club, but as a digital bridge. Meguro English is now a free translation and learning platform, carrying forward the same spirit: removing barriers, building community, and proving that language learning doesn't have to be expensive or exclusive.
We're here to make English accessible to everyone.
